Third Act

Today is one of this Ripper’s favorite days, Earth Day! My work with young children allows me to embrace our planet on a continual basis, and especially during the month of April when signs of Earth’s reawakening delight the soul. Spring has unfolded slowly in Utah this year with our historic snowpack. Yet at the same time, smiles emerge on our faces when we think how each snowflake will help refill the Great Salt Lake.

This brings me to the title of this short, but hopefully, inspiring post. This morning’s NY Times picked some of their favorite articles from their Climate Desk to share on this Earth Day. I recommend reading them all, but found one to be particularly relevant to those of us over 60. It highlighted two climate activists, Bill McKibben (a Senior Ripper) and Xiye Bastida (Ripper in Training), and how their work intersects.

Bill’s long involvement in climate action is an interesting one and ongoing. His latest effort is to find ways to involve older people in the climate movement and it is called Third Act. Recognizing the size and expertise of us, Senior Rippers, and putting us to work to help the next generation inherit the planet they deserve is Third Act’s mission. You may have seen the photo below in the news recently. I am sure that it will resonate with many of you.

So, on this 53rd Earth day, I challenge all of you dear readers to take a step forward to protect our air, water, and the land on which we live. Together we can make this, our Third Act, the most important one!

  1. Hi Cub Reporter Gail,

I did a google search of Third Act Utah and this website was one that came up. Thanks for your post! I realize that you are not connected with Third Act, and also found a link on their site that shows that there is not yet a working group in Utah: https://thirdact.org/working-groups/

At this point, I’m just gathering information as to whether there might be any interest out to start a Third Act Utah Working Group, and was glad to see you at least know about them. I believe that you will have my email when I submit my comment, so feel free to contact me. Thank you!

    1. Hi Liz, sorry it took so long to reply to your comment. For some reason, WordPress is not notifying me of new comments like they used to! This is Larry (Chief Senior Ripper), not Cub Reporter Gail (my wife). I am the keeper of the comments, so you’re stuck with me. I have heard of Third Act, but am not familiar with their purpose.

    2. Hi Liz,

I’m honored that you reached and hope that I can help stimulate interest in an Utah Chapter of Third Act. You can connect with me through my personal email – gailrose@aol.com. I look forward to our conversation!

      Best,
      Gail
